Much of the wildlife of the Sonoran Desert has adapted to cope with the harsh heat and periods of drought. It is home to many species of invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals.
Mule Deer
One of two species of deer found in the Sonoran desert, Mule deer can reach speeds of 45 mph!
Great Horned Owl
When clenched, a Great Horned Owl’s talons require force of 28 pounds to open. They use their deadly grip to sever the spine of large prey.
Coyote
As omnivores, Coyotes will eat just about anything. Their diet includes Cactus fruit, flowers, insects, rodents, lizards, rabbits, birds, and snakes.
Bobcat
Bobcats are most active at dawn and at dusk. It keeps on the move from three hours before sunset until about midnight, and then again from before dawn until three hours after sunrise.
Western Diamondback
This snake is active at night during the warm months and during the day in spring and fall; it returns to rocky cliffs for a winter hibernation period, but may exit to bask in the sun on warm days.
Roadrunner
The roadrunner is one of the very few animals quick enough to prey upon rattlesnakes and can run at speeds up to 20 mph.

One of the most amazing experiences for both myself and my kids. Staff taught my kids the basics of horseback riding to prepare them. During the ride, our guide was incredibly informational about the area, history and species.

Unplug and go for a ride through the desert. Our 8 year old son declared the trip “awesome,” so it doesn’t get much better than that. Thank you to David, and Reno, (who is one of the funniest horses I’ve ever met, and provided the comic relief).
